The Community Roundtable’s Community Maturity Model

This is an older article – from June 2009 – but it suggests eight competencies required for successful community management:

  • Strategy
  • Leadership
  • Culture
  • Community Management
  • Content and Programming
  • Policies and Governance
  • Tool
  • Metrics and Measurement

These are placed in a matrix with four levels of organizational maturity around social media “maturity”:

  1. Hierarchy
  2. Emergent Community
  3. Community
  4. Network

Then at each intersection they describe the relevant characteristic. Frankly, the maturity model is less interesting then the list of eight competencies, which seems pretty comprehensive.
